Hole-in-one for Conor Purcell in Fairhaven Trophy; Mairead Martin also going well
Portmarnock's Conor Purcell had a hole in one as he was joined by Killarney's Mairead Martin in qualifying for the final day of the Fairhaven Trophy at Fairhaven Golf Club, just half a mile from the back fence of Royal Lytham and St Annes.
Having opened with a 77, Purcell was three over for the day with nine holes to go and hurtling towards the cut line when he birdied the 10th, 12th, 14th and 15th to haul himself back into the mix.
A triple bogey six at the 16th undid most of his good work but he had a hole-in-one at the 17th and parred the last for a brilliant, level par round of 72.
At five-over par, Purcell is six shots behind leader Raphael Geissler from St Leon-Rot Golf Club in Germany, who leads by two shots from Sweden's Joacim Ahlund.
As for the girls competition, Killarney talent Mairead added a two over 77 to her opening 74 to go into the final round just four shots behind England's Elizabeth Prior.
