Teenager David Carey showed his mental strength in spades in the second round of the Alps Tour's Red Sea Little Venice Open at windy  at Sokhna Golf Club in Egypt.

The 18-year old schoolboy, a member of both Carton House and Hermitage, was looking to build on his opening 66 but suddenly found himself four over after six holes when he began bogey, par, birdie and then tripled his fifth hole (the 13th) by four putting.

Having followed his triple bogey seven with a bogey he could have been forgiven had he  letting his head go down.

But Carey played the remaining 12 holes in five under par — he made an eagle three and three birdies —  carding a one under 71 that leaves him tied for fourth and just three strokes off the lead entering Wednesday's final round. 

England’s Tom Shadbolt, 27,  shot 65 to share the lead on 10 under with French rookie Alex Widemann.  Scores

Matt Wallace is alone in third on eight under with amateur Carey in a five-way tied for fourth on seven under par alongside Frenchmen Léo Lespinasse, Nicolas Peyrichou and David Bobrowski and Spain's Eduardo Larranaga.

Gecko Pro Tour — Headfort's Rory McNamara is tied for third after the opening round of the event at La Cañada.
The former West and North of Ireland champion shot an immaculate, two under 69 to trail Spain's Jordi Garcia and Swede Anton Karlsson by two strokes. Scores
