Just 10 break 80 at The European Club - Gleeson leads with super 75

Only 10 players in the 86-strong field managed to break 80 in the opening round of the Irish Intervarsity Championship at The European Club.
Despite the fact that many tees were pushed forward, the testing conditions proved to much for most and the average score was 88.89 for the men with Alex Gleeson of UCD and Castle finishing with a birdie for a sensational, four over 75 and a one-stroke lead over defending champion Declan Loftus (76) of Maynooth.
NUIG's Peter Fleming, UCD's Ted Collins and Maynooth's Stuart Grehan are all a further shot back after posting 77s in what the GUI described as "cold, near-gale" conditions.

Maynooth's Carla Reynolds sot 79 to lead the Ladies Championship by two shots from Queens University's Jessica Ross on a day when the women averaged just over 93 on what is arguably Ireland's toughest championship test. Click for detailed scores from the women's competition.
