Finnish-ing birdie gives Papunen Irish Boys Under 15 crown
Finland’s Perre Papunen produced a grandstand finish to clinch the Irish Under 15 Boys title in a dramatic conclusion, writes the GUI.
Leading by one shot playing the last, but with Laytown & Bettystown's Thomas Mulligan breathing down his neck, Papunen rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt to seal victory.
Mulligan, the first round leader along with Newlands' Cameron Raymond, had fallen back, and was two over for the day before he rolled in a birdie at the 16th.
With Papunen two under for the day, that meant he held a one-shot advantage, but with the powerful Mulligan highly likely to birdie the last, and Papunen 100 yards short in two, the Championship looked as though it would be decided by a three-hole playoff.
That was until Papunen rolled his putt into the centre of the hole for a winning birdie.
Beaverstown's Sean Dowling finished third after a second round of 72.
