McSherry tops in Girls' British Open qualifiers
Lurgan's Niamh McSherry headed the Irish qualifiers for today's first matchplay round of the Girls' British Open Amateur Championship at Massereene Golf Club in Co Antrim.
She shot a pair of three over 76s to qualify in 16th place on six over par and was joined in today's matchplay draw by The Heath's Mary Doyle (78-77 for 41st), Lurgan's Annabel Wilson (75-81, 54th), Shandon Park's Chloe Weir (81-76, 58th) and Hermitage's Ciara Casey (79-79, 61st).
McSherry was one of the early starters and cruised into the second round with a 5 and 4 win over Germany's Laura Kowohl.
Doyle was one down to Agathe Laisne of France through nine holes as Wilson prepared to face Christine Danielsson of Sweden.
Weir was drawn to face Italy's Ludovica Farina with Casey taking on Scotland's Clara Young, who qualified fourth behind leading qualifier Puk Lyng Thomsen of Denmark (74-72).
