Maiden US win for Paul Dunne
Greystones’ Paul Dunne held off Moyola Park’s Chris Selfridge to win his maiden US collegiate tournament in Maryland on Monday.
The University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) junior topped the 60-strong field in the Georgetown Intercollegiate at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville with UAB also taking the team title.
UAB shot 847 (-5) for the three-round event, finishing 22 strokes ahead of Notre Dame while East of Ireland champion Dunne shot rounds of 69, 69 and 71 to win by two shots on four under par from team mate Martin Rohwer and the Univeristy of Toledo’s Selfridge, who is the reigning North of Ireland champion.
The result certainly pleased Greystones’ Alan Murray, who is now head coach at UAB.
“It was really nice to get a team win,” Murray said. “We were finally able to get it done. I am very proud and happy for them. It was a nice way to finish the fall.
“I am very happy for Paul. It was good for him to get his first win. He works very hard and is so committed.”
