No more Seve Trophy excuses - Olazábal

This year’s event clashed with the FedEx Cup play-offs in America with Luke Donald, Martin Laird and Justin Rose all staying away to play in the BMW Championship at Cog Hill. In 2013 it will be played opposite the Presidents Cup.

Olazabal was disappointed that Ryder Cup stars such as Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer and Robert Karlsson decide to make themselves unavailable for this event, which he’d hoped would be a fitting homage to the late Seve Ballesteros.

As a result, the next edition will be scheduled to coincide with the Presidents Cup match between the US and the Rest of the World - avoiding a clash with the PGA Tour’s play-offs.

Olazábal told Ten-golf.es: “It’s clear that it’s the players that make a tournament great and the schedule is key.

“This year it co-incided with one of the FedEx Cup play-off events but I’m reliably informed that it will be played opposite the Presidents Cup next time.

“So that means the players won’t be able to use that as an excuse.”

Ryder Cup skipper Ollie wrote to the players, asking them to turn up in Paris last week .

But while Ian Poulter came back from America having being eliminated from the FedEx Cup, McIlroy, McDowell, Kaymer and Karlsson all decided to rest.
