McDowell lurking in Singapore
Australian Adam Scott leads the Barclays Singapore Open by a stroke from defending champion Ian Poulter and Korea’s Kyung-nam Kang. But the Terminator is just behind them.
US Open champion Graeme McDowell is lurking ominously just two shots off the pace as he bids for a fourth victory of a momentous season that would see him close the gap on Martin Kaymer at the top of the Race to Dubai standings.
Scott confessed that he struggled at times as he fired a third round 69 on The Serapong at Sentosa Golf Club to lead by the slimmest of margins from Poulter (68) and Kang (67) on 14-under.
But as Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley missed the cut when they completed their second rounds on Saturday morning, McDowell is still well in contention for the €1m top prize on 12 under thanks to a 68 that featured four birdies and a solitary bogey at the 13th.
And while Kaymer is tied for 14th on seven under, Portrush man McDowell only has eyes for his own game.
“It’s important that I focus on my own game as there’s nothing I can do about Kaymer,” said McDowell. “It’s not rugby and I can’t go out there and tackle him - all I can do is to concentrate on my own ball.
“I’ve got a big day tomorrow and it’s a big day for The Race to Dubai. I’ve got to stay focused and play my game.”
Harrington needed to pick up a shot over the closing three holes on the Serapong course on Saturday morning to progress but bogeyed the 16th and parred the last two holes for a one over 72 that left him a two shots outside the mark on one under.
Clarke complete a three over 74 to miss by a shot on two under while McGinley had a second successive 76 for a disappointing 10 over total.
