Hearn and Farrell lead Mullingar Scratch Trophy at halfway

Tramore’s Jack Hearn and Co Louth’s Evan Farrell will take a one-stroke lead into Monday’s final two rounds at the Mullingar Scratch Trophy.

In excellent form, as evidenced by his run to the semi-finals in the South of Ireland Championship at Lahinch, Hearn added a 68 to his opening 69 to share top spot on seven-under with Farrell, who made came home in six-under 31 en route to a morning 67 before adding a 70 in the afternoon.

They are one stroke clear of Fota Island’s David Howard with Connemara’s Luke O’Neill just a shot further back.

Headfort’s Evan Shipp made 11 birdies as he posted a brace of 70s to sit alone in fifth on four under while reigning AIG Irish Close champion Quentin Carew is lurking just four shots off the pace alongside Letterkenny’s Cian Harkin, Forrest Little’s Jack McDonnell and Adam Smith, who is bidding to become the first member of Mullingar to win the event in its 61-year history.
