Rafferty edges out McCabe in playoff for Laytown and Bettystown Scratch Cup
Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty captured the Laytown and Bettystown Senior Scratch Cup for the third time since 2013 when he beat Portmarnock Links’ AJ McCabe with a birdie at the fourth playoff hole.
Rafferty opened with a one-under 70 to trail Tullamore’s Eoin Marsden by two strokes but then made five birdies and an eagle at the 18th against three bogeys in a four-under 67 in the afternoon to tie with McCabe on five-under 137, four strokes ahead of Warrenpoint international Colm Campbell, who shot 68
McCabe started his second round with a bogey at the fifth but added seven birdies (sixth, seventh, ninth, 12th, 14th, 1st and fourth) and an eagle three at the 18th against further bogeys at the 11th and 13th in a six-under 65.
In the playoff, both men parred the first and second and while both went long at the par-three third and failed to save par, McCabe from 15 feet and Rafferty from 10 feet, the matter was settled at the short, par-five 18th,

Rafferty hit his tee shot 30 yards past McCabe, who hit a two-iron short of the gap in front of the green.
Rafferty then hit a 185-yard approach to the 25 feet and after McCabe pitched to 15 feet, the Dundalk player lagged up close and after McCabe missed his birdie putt, tapped in for victory.
