Irish fail to qualify in Copa del Rey in Barcelona
Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley and Carton House’s Keith Egan failed to qualify on a countback for the matchplay stages of the Copa del Rey at Real Club de Golf El Prat in Spain.
Foley shot a second-round 74 and Egan a 76 to leave them on six-over 150 as just one of the seven players on that mark made the top 32 who will battle it out in matchplay stages, which start at the Barcelona venue today.
After turning in 37, Irish Close champion Foley got back to level par with two holes to play but double-bogeyed the eighth, his 17th, to finish 35th in the race for 32 spots in the matchplay.
Egan also started on the back nine and double-bogeys at the 16th and 17th proved fatal as he turned in four-over 40 and was unable to reply on his homeward nine, signing for a 76.
Michael Young (80-77, 157), Anthony Carr (77-80, 157) and David Shiel (84-81, 165) and Eoin Sullivan (79-88, 167) also failed to qualify.
