Lawson and Matus go low at Adamstal
Michael Hoey and Niall Kearney led the Irish challenge as Deyen Lawson and Stanislav Matus shared the first-round lead at the Euram Bank Open in Austria.
Hoey (41) carded a one-under 69 in his first start on the European Tour since the Portugal Masters last October, mixing three birdies with a double bogey to share 59th place after the opening round at Golf Club Adamstal.
Australian Lawson set the early clubhouse target, carding a seven-under 63 that included nine birdies, five of those consecutively from the 12th hole.
Two early birdies were cancelled out by bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes, but a birdie on the ninth start a run of seven gains in eight holes.
Matus, of the Czech Republic, joined Lawson in a share of the lead after finishing his round in the evening, going bogey-free in the Austrian Alps.
The pair were one stroke ahead of Sweden’s Philip Eriksson, who also started strongly at last week’s Austrian Open, Oliver Lindell of Finland and Englishman Jordan Wrisdale on six under par. Both Eriksson and Wrisdale were also bogey-free, while Lindell carded eight birdies.
Nine players share sixth place on five under par, including Matus’ compatriot Ondrej Lieser, who made a hole-in-one on the 12th. A further nine players share 15th on four under par, rounding out a congested top 20.
Dubliner Kearney (32) made three birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey in a level par 70 that left him tied 81st but it was a more challenging day for Robin Dawson and Gavin Moynihan.
Dawson (24) made two birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey in a three-over 73 that left him joint 124th while Moynihan (25) made three birdies, six bogeys and a double-bogey in a five-over 75 to end the opening day tied for 135th.
Deyen Lawson: “I was hitting it steady but made a couple of little errors late on the front nine. I stayed positive and shot-by-shot. I didn’t realise I’d made that many birdies in a row, after the ninth I had six more in seven holes.
“I just tried to hit each shot as good as I can, not worrying about what it was for – for bogey or birdie. The views are great here, so you just have to look around when you’re a bit frustrated and take your mind off golf. These hills take your mind off golf pretty quickly. All in all, it’s a good start and a good position after round one.”
Stanislav Matus: “I’m happy to be back here. I love this place. Diamond (Country Club) wasn’t suiting me that well last week but I really like to shape the ball here. I enjoyed the company of my group and tried to enjoy the day – it was beautiful, it was supposed to rain but it didn’t, what else can I ask for?
“The course suits me really well. I can aim at points or hit little bounces. I don’t like courses where I can’t see the targets. Here I can see them all. I read my putts very well, on the front nine I think I had ten putts – that helped as well.
“I wasn’t really expecting much because I wasn’t hitting the ball great on the range. But yesterday I went on the course because I knew I’d be playing late today, just to get some feel. I got the feel, so I enjoyed it a lot today.”
Oliver Lindell: “I was laughing on the eighth, I was making every single putt – from six to ten metres. On the front nine, I missed just two putts, but even those touched the hole. I almost holed out on 11, I hit it in to ten centimetres from the hole. Then another birdie on 12 and the putter got a little cold after that.
“I took a three-putt on 13 but still managed to finish a good round. I played well here last too, so I like the course.”
Jordan Wrisdale: “I played really solid on the front nine. On the first, I hit it to a foot and tapped that in, which was a good start. I hit a lot of good shots on the back nine, didn’t capitalise on a couple of holes but the eagle on 15 sweetened the deal a bit and a nice up and down on the last to keep me going.
“You want to get off to a good start on any golf course, but to do it here, it’s going to be as much about endurance because it’s so hilly.”
