Pádraig Harrington was a scratch cup specialist during his amateur career and one of his final acts in the amateur game was to defend the De Lacy Staunton Scratch Cup at Athlone Golf Club in 1995.

The trophy was presented to the club by Castlerea's Maurice De Lacy Staunton, father of the two-time South of Ireland champion and former R&A selector Rupert De Lacy Staunton, and first played in 1964 when Noel Fogarty won by five strokes from Mullingar's Mick Duffy.

After a ten-year hiatus, the event will be revived on Sunday, April 14 with Michael Moore Mercedes Benz as sponsors.

Played over 36 holes, the handicap limit is four (4 ) and the entry fee, which includes lunch, is €40.

There are prizes for the first, second, third, fourth and fifth gross scores, the second 18 and the first and second nett.

Entries can be made by phone on 090-6492073 Ext 2 or by email to athlonegolfclub@gmail.com. Entries close tomorrow, Friday, 12 April at 1 pm and a timesheet will be posted at 6 pm.
