Irish U14 Boys: Mulligan streaks to 11-shot win
Daniel Mulligan became the latest in a long list of championship winners from Laytown and Bettystown when he cruised to an 11-shot victory in the Irish U14 Boys Amateur Open at Mullingar.
He follows in the footsteps of the likes of Des Smyth, Declan Branigan John McGinn, Robbie Cannon or the Wickham sisters Carol and Philomena as the winner of a major amateur championship
Mulligan had a six-shot lead after making six birdies in an opening 68 and he then added a second round 73 to finish at three under for the tournament, 11 strokes clear of Balmoral’s Fionn Dobbin.
The four-handicapper made three more birdies during round two and while he could not break par again, his 73 was still the best score of the day.
Matthew Giles from Greenore was his closest rival going into the final day but Giles’ challenge faded as he posted 79 to finish third on nine over.
Dobbin came through to take second place overall and claim the Under 13 medal thanks to rounds of 75 and 77.
