2028 Ryder Cup for Hazeltine but Adare must wait on 2026 decision
The PGA of America has announced that Hazeltine National in Minnesota will host the 2028 Ryder Cup.
But golf fans here will have to wait until September 2019 to discover if Adare Manor will become the second Irish venue to play host in 2026 - twenty years after Ireland’s first staging at The K Club.
Purchased by businessman JP Manus in 2014, the exclusive resort reopened its doors last November after a multi-million euro, 21-month refurbishment project.
The course was redesigned by Tom Fazio and will officially reopen to coincide with the launch of the 2020 JP McManus Pro-Am on April 20 when Rory McIlroy, Paul McGinley, Pádraig Harrington and Shane Lowry are expected to play the course.
Speaking last year, Mr McManus said it was his "dream" to see Adare Manor host the Ryder Cup.
"The Ryder Cup is a very very big ask, and like every other golf club in Ireland, we'd be delighted to host the Ryder Cup, but it's one of (my) long term dreams," he said.
"The soonest possible time (to host it) would be 2026, if you're ever going to get it. But, there's an awful lot of tough competition from within Europe and Britain, and I'm sure, from the rest of Ireland."
"I do believe we have the facilities and an area and a venue that can cater for it."
The PGA of America announced yesterday that Hazeltine National will become the first US venue to host the event for a second time in 2028, just 12 years after the successful 2016 staging when the US beat Europe 17-11 to capture the trophy for the first time since 2008.
The PGA America has now announced its next four home venues — Whistling Straits in Wisconsin (2020), Bethpage Black in New York (2024) and Hazeltine National (2028).
This year’s Ryder Cup will be held at Le Golf National in Paris with Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome set for 2022 after beating off competition from Austria, Germany and Spain.
However, European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley wants to wait until after this year's match in Paris and reflect on that before deciding on the nuts and bolts of the bidding process for 2026.
While he was only appointed as CEO in April 2015, the Canadian was involved in the final decision process that awarded the 2022 Ryder Cup to Rome.
Government support, a world-class golf facility and quality infrastructure near a major international city are considered key requirements by the European Tour.
Adare’s biggest rival could be England, which hasn’t hosted the event since McGinley holed the winning putt at The Belfry in 2002.
