Pebble Beach: Lowry five back, Harrington resurrects, McGinley adrift
Shane Lowry continued his run of sub-par golf in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am but Pádraig Harrington had to dig deep to recover from disaster as Paul McGinley slipped below the projected cut line in California.
As Matt Jones shot (66) and Brandt Snedeker (67) stormed Spyglass Hill to grab the halfway lead on 12 under par, one clear of Justin Hicks (67, MP), Lowry posted a four under 67 at the Monterey Peninsula Shore Course to move up 12 spots to tied 26th on seven under.
Not only that, he's tied fourth in the pro-am standings with amateur partner Dermot Desmond improving on his score seven times as they posted a 60 to trail Pat Perez and Michael Lund by four shots on 20 under.
The spectacular track proved costly for Harrington last year, when a triple bogey eight at the 12th and a six at the 13th undid his title chances. This year the Dubliner hit a poor tee shot at the 13th and ran up a triple bogey seven.
Three over early, Harrington showed that he is never better than when his back is against a wall and displayed all his trademark fighting qualifies to play the next 13 holes in four under only to bogey the last.
A level par 71 was something of a result with a seven on the card but with scoring lower than normal thanks to the fine weather, Harrington fell 30 spots to the projected cut line at tied 60th.
McGinley played Spyglass but made eight bogeys against just four birdies in a four over 76 and shares 148th on six over.
Despite suffering from illness, Jason Day shot a best-of-the-day, nine under 62 on the Monterey Peninsula Course to move up tot 14th on nine under.
