McDowell misses 54-hole cut in Canada

“Another strange day at the office,” McDowell tweeted after his round. “Didn’t drive it great and putted awful. Been working so hard on my long game lately putting has suffered.”

Three hours later he was back in the social network scene, admitting he was shocked to discover he’d missed the three-round cut.

“I knew the Saturday cut rule existed, but I thought 78 players was okay. I guess it’s if 78 or more players make the cut the rule kicks in.”

McDowell now has an extra day to recharge before next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, where he will be going for his fourth win of what has been an extremely odd but nonethless successful season.

Bar the majors, where he has failed to hit top form, he’s taken every chance he’s had to win but his game showed signs of wear and tear over the weekend at Muirfield and that continued at Glen Abbey.

A total of 29 putts in the third round might not sound bad but McDowell had one zero-putt green and missed more than his usual share of putts inside 10 feet.

More worrying was his driving accuracy, which is the basis of his game. He hit just four fairways (two on each nne)

Following the withdrawal of halfway leader Hunter Mahan to attend the birth of a daughter, Brandt Snedeker hit a nine under 63 to lead by one from Sweden’s David Lingmerth on 14 under with Ryder Cup team mate Matt Kuchar just two behind in joint third with Jason Bohn.
