Ravenstein Royal Golf and Country ClubColm Moriarty scraped into the weekend’s play at the Telenet Trophy after a level par round of 71 meant he sat right on the one over par cut line after the second round at Ravenstein Royal Golf and Country Club.

The Athlone man did not get off to the start he would have desired with bogeys at the first, second and fourth holes but birdies at the sixth, ninth, 12th and 13th holes paired with just one more dropped shot at the 11th meant he enters the third round in tied 59th place.

“It was a struggle,” said Moriarty. “After going three over through four I think I hung in well. I haven’t played that much recently but I started well in Madeira two weeks ago – I was five under for the first round – but I shot three over the next day and missed the cut by one.

“I’m just not competitively sharp at the moment. It’s the little things that affect you when you haven’t played competitively for a few months, so it’s nice to make the cut and get into the weekend and hopefully have two good rounds to get my season up and running.

“It would have been annoying to miss the cut again by a shot because you never really get going when you only get two rounds.”

The only other Irishman in the field, Stephen Grant, missed the cut after he followed up his level par opening round of 71 with a five over par 76.

Marco Crespi, meanwhile, took the outright lead into the weekend after a scorching six under par second round of 65 moved him to nine under par for the tournament.

That left the Italian two shots clear of John Parry, Olly Whitely and Alexandre Kaleka as first round leader Andy Sullivan struggled to maintain his momentum after an overnight suspension in play meant he finished his first round on the second day of play before teeing off for the second round soon after.
