Rossmore's Kate Dwyer will be a player to watch for when she returns for May's Flogas Irish Women’s and Girls’ Amateur Open after she overcame wet and windy conditions to win the Woodbrook Ladies' Scratch Cup.

The final-year Law Student at Maynooth University carded rounds of 71 and 74, finishing in near darkness, to win by one stroke from Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh on one-under 145.

“It's my first win in Woodbrook and I am obviously delighted,” said the 22-year-old, who took advantage of fine weather in the morning to card a 71 and lead by a shot from Hermitage’s Kate Lanigan and by three from Walsh.

“This is a good run around as well for the Irish Amateur coming up in May so I'm really happy with the win. The two new holes they have built aren't open yet but we got a good idea of what they look like.

"I hit the ball really well this morning but the putter wasn't quite rolling as well as I would have liked. But made a good few birdies, kept it in play and kept the big number off my scorecard, especially with the weather this afternoon.

“We would have been flying if it had been like it was this morning but I am very happy with the result.”

Dwyer had no idea where she stood coming down the stretch and while Walsh shot a best of the afternoon 72 in the group ahead, the champion finished strongly at the popular Shankill parkland, closing out the win in near darkness.

“I just played solid and made a few good up and downs, which were important,” she said of an afternoon marred by squally showers and a stiff sea breeze. “I stuck in there for the last few holes which were playing tough with the wind off the sea.

I had no idea where I stood playing the 18th there but I had a wedge in my hand with the wind off the right and the pin tucked on the right. I thought if I hit this at the pin and the wind grabs it slightly I will be in the middle of the green.

“I couldn't see the hole for my first putt at all so I was just trying to get it up there as near as possible and that's what happened.”

The next event on the schedule is next Sunday’s Royal County Down Ladies’ Scratch Cup.

The Flogas Irish Women’s and Girls’ Amateur Open Championship will take place at Woodbrook from 19-21 May.
