Leona Maguire sets up tilt at ninth college win with sublime 66
World No 1 Leona Maguire is on course for the ninth collegiate win of her career and her second this season after a second-round 66 gave her a two-stroke lead in the Tar Heel Invitational in North Carolina.
The Co Cavan star didn't drop a shot all day in her 26th sub-70 round for Duke, picking up birdies at the second, fourth and eighth to turn in 33 at the University of North Carolina's Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill
She then birdied the 13th to take the outright lead, birdied the 16th and 17th to move to six-under for the day before topping off a superb day by rolling home a 20-foot par putt for a closing sand save.
The 22-year old leads by two strokes on nine-under-par from South Carolina's Ainhoa Olarra (67) and by three from Arkansas' Maria Fassi (65) and Virginia's Anna Redding (68).
Duke shot 17-under-par for the day — the second-lowest team total in school history — to lead the team standings by ten strokes from Alabama on 22-under par.
Virginia Elena Carta (68) is tied fifth, Jaravee Boonchant (68) tied 10th, Ana Belac (69) tied 21st and Miranda Wang (75) tied 40th.
