Meadow leading in Canada after sweet 66
LPGA - The Olympic Games appear to have done Stephanie Meadow's confidence no harm as she opened with a six under 66 — her low round to par this season on the LPGA Tour — to take the clubhouse lead in the Canadian Pacific Women's Open.
The Jordanstown star made seven birdies and just one bogey, finishing with back to back birdies to lead in the clubhouse and to share second place overall on six under par with word No 1 Lydia Ko, Mi Jung Hur and Mirim Lee a shot back on five under.
Korea's Chella Choi was leading on seven under par through 14 holes when play was suspended with Karine Icher of France also on six under through 14 holes.
Play was suspended due to darkness at 8:23 p.m. with 54 golfers still to complete their first rounds.
“It’s awesome,” Meadow said. “You know, something that I’ve been focusing on all year is to start off a little better in all my tournaments, so to come out today and shoot low has been spectacular.”
Due to inclement weather and the threat of lightning in the area, play was delayed for two hours and 56 minutes from 11:44 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
“Yeah, a little bit, especially when you’re on a little bit of a roll,” Meadow said about whether the delay had affected her.
"You kind of start thinking and whatever. But I just texted my mom and my coach, and my coach just said stay in your own little bubble and keep doing what you’re doing, and it worked.”
