Round-up: Lawrie lasting; Rory lurking; Dawson wins Euro; Power down
European Tour — Peter Lawrie goes into the 72° OPEN D'ITALIA presented by DAMIANI, with a great chance to win back his tour card.
Some €25,000 outside the Top 110 in the Race to Dubai, the veteran knows that a decent final round will put him ahead of the game as the season enters a crucial phase.
Lawrie shot a two under 70 and is tied for 16th on 11 under, six shots behind Romain Wattel (66), Sweden's Jens Fahrbring (68) and Germany's Martin Kaymer (65).
With 15 players within five strokes of the lead going into the final round, the record crowds which have flocked to Golf Club Milano this week are set for a thrilling final round.
Kaymer said: “If you play a fun course like this, with crowds like this, and play the way I did then it is difficult not to enjoy the day. I had a very good start and then played well throughout so it was a very good day."
Paul McGinley (68) is tied 41st on eight under with Padraig Harrington (69) tied 50th on seven under. Darren Clarke (76) is last on level par.
European Universities — As his Maynooth University colleagues won the AIG Senior Cup at Carton House, Robin Dawson triumphed in the individual standings in the European Universities Championship in Switzerland. Stirling University won the team title with Maynooth University in second place.
PGA Tour - Rory McIlroy is still unhappy with his putting but confident he's not too far away from his best in the BMW Championship in Chicago. As Jason Day shot a 69 to lead by six shots on 20 under from Scott Piercy and Daniel Berger, McIlroy posted a four under 67 with birdies at the last two holes to move up to tied fourth on 13 under. And yet at seven off the lead and with Day looking like to get the win that would make him world No 1, McIlroy was far from totally happy.
Web.com Tour — Seamus Power eagled the second and birdied the 18th but he made three bogeys in between to post a 72 that saw him fall three spots to tied 58th in the Small Business Connection Championship at River Run, the second event of the Playoffs.
The Top 25 get PGA Tour cards after the playoffs but Power is projected to fall 20 spots to 56th in the standings.
At one under par in South Carolina, he's 13 shots behind Emiliano Grillo and Eric Axley. Scores
