Solid start for Maguire twins at Duke
Cavan twins Leona and Lisa Maguire have hit the ground running with Duke University in the US and made sold starts on their collegiate debuts.
Leona opened with a three under 69 in the Powerade Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club Hanahan, South Carolina — the lowest career-opening round by a Duke freshman since Amanda Blumenherst did it in 2005-06 — and added a one under 71 to go into the final round tied for seventh, seven shots behind Wake Forest's Sierra Sims on four under.
According to the Duke Blue Devils website:
Leona "opened her day with a birdie on the 344-yard, par four second hole, before posting six pars and a bogey on No. 5. After making the turn at even par, Maguire rolled in three birdies, had two bogeys and four pars to finish with a one-under, 71. She hit 13 greens, 13 fairways and had 31 putts."
Twin sister Lisa opened with a 74 and added a two under 70 to share 19th spot on level par.
"A day after registering a 74 in her first collegiate round, freshman Lisa Maguire fired a two-under-par, 70, on her way to moving into a tie for 19th place with a 144... [She] had a red hot start with four birdies over her first seven holes and made the turn with a two-under score, after suffering bogeys on No. 1 and No. 5.
Her birdie on No. 6 was a chip in from 20 yards with her lob wedge. On the back nine, Maguire had a birdie on the 12th and a bogey on No. 13, while turning in pars on the other holes. She played her final 13 holes at two-under-par on the day. Maguire hit 13 fairways, 13 greens and had 30 putts."
The team is tied for fifth place and only seven shots off the team lead through 36 holes.
