Leona takes up the baton at Prestwick
Leona Maguire fired an eagle and five birdies in a four under 70 to leap-frog twin sister Lisa and move into contention in the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Prestwick.
As Lisa made just one birdie as she followed her opening 71 with a disappointing six over 80 to slip 11 strokes behind Chinese teenager Jing Yan, Leona finished the day tied for sixth on two under.
Winner of last week’s British Girls’ title, Jing shot a 72 to lead by two shots on eight under from Italy’s Roberta Liti with Leona Maguire six shots behind.
Castletroy’s Chloe Ryan (74) moved up to14th on one over with Olivia Mehaffey (72) and Paula Grant (73) 12 shots off the pace on four over.
The cut fell at seven over par 155 with Seapoint’s Carla Reynolds making in on the limit after a 77 as Lahinch’s Sinead Sexton was edged out by a shot after a 74. Skerries Maria Dunne missed by two after an 80.
