South County closes its doors
South County Golf Club became the latest golfing victim of the economic crisis when it annouced its decision to cease operations on Wednesday.
In a statement, the County Dublin club said:
The South County Golf Club (2004) Ltd regrets to announce that the company has taken the decision to cease operations as of this morning, May 9th, until further notice. The decision has been taken as the company has become insolvent and the company has had no option but to cease operations. The company has been operating under extremely difficult market conditions in Ireland for golf clubs generally. The Company regrets having to take this action and further announcements regarding Shareholder and Creditor meetings will be made in due course.
South County Golf Club (2004) Ltd would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of its employees at this time. We thank them, together with those shareholders and other parties who have supported the golf club and the Company down through the years.
Designed by Dr Nick Bielenberg, who was also involved in the construction of Luttrellstown Castle, the course situated in Brittas Co. Dublin, opened for play in 2002.
In 2009, Carr Golf Services came on board to help manage the club in tough financial times and a new short game facility opened the following year.
However, Carr Golf ceased to manage the club in March 2011 (and not March this year as stated in a previous edition of this story), and insists that the club “was operating without issue at that point.”
Carr Golf has had no involvement with South County for the past 14 months
