O'Donovan starts well in Argentinian Amateur
Lucan’s Ricahrd O’Donovan is tied for seventh place after the first qualifying round of the Argentinian Amateur Championship at Estancias Golf Club in Buenos Aires.
The Dubliner had four birdies and three bogeys in a one under 71 that left him just two strokes behind Canada’s Garrett Rank, Holland’s Lars Van Meijel and local hopes Federico Torresagasti and Joaquin Bonjour with the top 64 after 36-holes qualifying for the matchplay stages. Mourne’s Reeve Whitson shot a four over 76 to share 42nd place at the water-strewn venue designed by Randall Thompson.
The Argentinian Amateur was first played on 15 August 1895, making it is the sixth oldest amateur event in the world behind the British Amateur Championship (1885), the Irish Amateur Open (1892), the Irish Close (1893), the US Amateur (1894) and the New Zealand Amateur. Argentina’s Championship is tied for sixth with the Canadian and Welsh Championships, which also began in 1895.
