Boonchu on course for back-to-back wins
Denis O’Sullivan and Jimmy Heggarty went backwards but home hero Boonchu Ruangkit surged ahead in his bid for back-to-back European Senior Tour victories in Thailand.
O’Sullivan posted a two over 74 and Heggarty a 73 as Ruangkit blasted a sensational 66 to open up a three shot lead over countryman Jamnian Chitprasong on 14 under par going into the final round of the Chang Thailand Senior Masters.
England’s Peter Mitchell was the last man to notch successive Senior Tour victories back in October 2008 when he won in consecutive weeks in Scotland and Italy but 53 year old Ruangkit is poised to follow him into the record books at the Royal Gems Golf Club in Nakhonpathom.
“I am very happy with my form right now although I must admit I’m a little tired,” Boonchu said. “But if I get a good night’s rest I am sure I’ll be up for the challenge tomorrow.
“To win two weeks in a row would be a fantastic achievement for me and one I’ll be going all out to accomplish although I know it won’t be easy as there are a lot of good players behind me, especially Jamnian who played really well today and who I know will be difficult to beat.”
O’Sullivan got off to the perfect start with birdies at the first two holes putting him inside the top 10 on five under par. But while he followed bogeys at the seventh and eighth with a birdie at the ninth to turn in one under 35, he dropped three shots in his last five holes for a disappointing homeward 39 and a 74 that relegated him to 28th place on one-under par.
Heggarty’s round was a similar tale of two halves but in contrast to the Cork man, he kept the best for last.
Three over par for his round through six holes, he steadied the ship with 10 pars and a brace of birdies at the 12th and 13th for a 73 that leaves him on one-over par with a round to play.
