Gillen hanging on at Q-School
Martina Gillen produced a battling back nine comeback to keep her card hopes alive at the Ladies European Tour Q-School in Spain.
The Beaverstown player crashed to five over for the day after nine holes at La Manga’s North Course. But she dug deep to pick up two birdies coming home and card a second round 74 that leaves her just outside the vital top 30 on six over par.
Amateur Danielle McVeigh struggled to a six over 77 to crashed to tied 87th on 14 over. But the Royal County Down player is still just four shots outside the top 70 who make the cut after tomorrow’s fourth round.
Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall leads by three shots on five under after a two under 69.
Meanwhile, the Ladies European Tour has annouced that the 2011 season will begin in Australia from February 3-6 with the Women’s Australian Open in Melbourne and will conclude with the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters in the Middle East.
The schedule includes the new Prague Golf Masters in the Czech Republic from September 8-11 and The Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle from September 23-25.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open, which is the final major championship of the year, will be played over the famous links course at Carnoustie for the first time from July 28-31.
The following week’s AIB Ladies Irish Open at Killeen Castle will provide a dress rehearsal for The Solheim Cup, taking place seven weeks later at the same venue.
