Teen Leona Maguire becomes youngest winner of Scottish Women's Open

Teen sensation Leona Maguire made history when she became the youngest winner of the Helen Holm Scottish Women's Amateur Open strokeplay title at Royal Troon.

The Cavan prodigy, 14, finished two shots clear of Scottish Under-21 champion Kelsey MacDonald for a wire-to-wire win on six-under par.

Leona Maguire with the Hell Holm trophyTwin sister Lisa finished tied for third on three under par thanks a third successive round of 74. She birdied four holes coming home but a bogey six at the 16th cost her a share of second place with runner up MacDonald.

Crowned as the youngest winner of the Irish Close title last year, Ballyconnell native Leona opened with a six-under par 69 at Troon Portland and followed a second round 77 at the same course with a closing, two under par 73 at Open venue Royal Troon thanks to two birdies in the last four holes.

She said: "I am absolutely thrilled. I had never played either of the courses before I came to Troon a few days ago but I like links golf.

"The weather wasn't great but I loved the tournament. I think my putting was the best part of my game over the three days. I holed a few good ones."

Maguire is the first Irish woman to win the title since current European Ladies Tour professional Martina Gillen triumphed in 2005.

Danielle McVeigh from Royal County Down Ladies matched Leona's best-of-the-day 73 to finish joint fifth.

The Maguire twins will be back in action on Monday when they represent Loreto College Cavan in the Irish Schools Finals at Edmondstown.
