Saltman takes Lytham Trophy

Rory McIlroy had a nightmare finish as Scotland's Lloyd Saltman captured the prestigious Lytham Trophy by three shots.

The Holywood star was one under par for his final round and level with Saltman on six-under par with five holes to play.

But he bogeyed the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th to card a 74 and finish three shots adrift in a share of second place with Nigel Edwards on two-under par 282.

Saltman led the event from start to finish with a third round 74 giving him a two-shot lead over McIlroy entering the afternoon's final round.

The Scot eventually closed with a two-over par 73 in testing conditions to win with a five-under par total of 279.

Walker Cup veteran Edwards of Wales carded a pair of level par 71s on the final day to share the runner-up spot with McIlroy with England's Ben Parker three shots further back.

McIlroy will get his chance for revenge in the AIB Irish Amateur Open at Royal Dublin from May 11-13.
