Lawrie fed up with nearly man tag
Peter Lawrie is fed up being a nearly man on the European Tour.
The Dubliner, 33, was gutted to miss out on a Volvo Masters spot after poor finish to the Mallorca Classic.
And while his fifth place cheque for €77,400 took his career earnings to €1.92 million, he's wondering when his turn to win will come around.
He said: "I look back on the year and I have done all right. It has been an onwards and upwards year. There has been a progression and I see a steady progression up the line.
"I am delighted that Gregory Bourdy won but sometimes you wonder when your chance is coming."
A nightmare double bogey six at the 16th cost Lawrie his chance of catching Bourdy.
But it also denied him the third place he needed to qualify for this week's Volvo Masters.
Lawrie caught the lip of a bunker with an ambitious five-iron recovery and confessed that it may have been too adventurous.
He said: "I am disappointed. I came here playing so well and gave myself an opportunity. I birdied 14 and 15 and hit a bad shot into the bunker.
"Maybe I was trying to be too macho by hitting a five-iron out of it but it hit the lip and went up the face of the other bunker.
"It always seems to happen when you are in that position. Things go wrong and they went wrong on the 16th.
"Then I drove in the rough on 17 and got a flyer over the back and made a good up and down. Then on 18 I pulled a five iron and went over the back and made bogey.
"It is disappointing to finish tied for fifth in the end. It is another week and another decent paycheck.
"But it finishes off the year poorly not getting into Valderrama. I really have played well the last couple of weeks but with a new baby just arrived, you have to count your blessings."
Lawrie is still trying to live up to his Rookie of the Year Award of 2003, when he lost the Spanish Open in a play-off with Peter Hedblom and eventual winner Kenneth Ferrie.
Since then, his best finish is third in the 2005 Spanish Open and he's becoming frustrated that he has not yet managed to win.
A few weeks break will see him come out fighting again for two events in South Africa before Christmas.
He said: "I'll possibly play the two events down there. I don't want to go too long without playing."
