Play-off agony for Darcy
Eamonn Darcy’s play-off agony in last week’s Estoril Seniors Open cost him a place in Ireland’s roll of honour.
With 12 wins to his credit worldwide, a win over Denis Durnian in Portugal would have lifted the ‘Darce’ into second place with Ronan Rafferty as one of the most prolific Irish winners ever.
Darcy conceded the tournament to Durnian, after just one shot of the play-off, when he broke a branch on his practice swing.
Rafferty has 13 wins to his credit but there are no prizes for guessing Ireland’s best – Christy O’Connor Senior.
With 24 wins between 1955 and 1983 the 77 year old is likely to take some beating.
Darcy hasn’t had a win since he took the Emirates Desert Classic in Dubai in 1990.
